38. READ. LOOK. THINK.

READ: “Tragedy + time = comedy. But I don’t have the benefit of time. So I’m just going to tell you the tragedy and know that everything is going to be okay.” | Paris Review – The Art of Fiction No. 214, Alan Hollinghurst |  The awkward but necessary role of technology in fiction.

LOOK: Chicks With Hits. Absurd, amazing mixes of 80s and 90s music by women. | Dowry.

THINK: Early relationships, not brainpower, key to adult happiness. | Four ways the Internet could go down. I have been wondering how I’d feel if one day my Twitter, blog, my entire online presence disappeared. I think I’d feel a bit relieved. And perhaps free? | Leaving the Guardian, creativity vs mild depression, the quantified self and running. | Women are being evaluated against unicorns, not against men. And that’s why there are so few visible women in tech – or advertising.

  1. I wonder how the world would fall apart if the internet went down. I bet people would cry in the streets, wandering amlessly continually trying to find a connection on their phone in disbelief. They’rd be disbelief and anger.

    • I wonder that too – if just my internet presence went down, I’d be philosophical (I think). If the whole network collapsed: we’d all run out into the streets desperate to talk about it – how would we even find out what was going on – radio? Such a weird thought.

      • I think about that happening with electricity too. My parents keep a land line for just that reason, but their phones are all plug in cordless! I think our generation will be okay, but if it happens to the next generation, they will be clueless. They’ll never know a different world than the internet.
