I’ve now done three pottery workshops over three years, one in Melbourne at the Carlton Arts Centre and now two in London at City Lit. I wonder if there will ever come a day when I’m not the most abject beginner? I know enough to tell you one thing though. Every time the teacher demonstrates, at least one student will say, “You make it look so easy.” You can bet your life on it in every class.

Any visit to Melbourne is incomplete without a trip to Heide, the gallery of Modern Art a fifteen minute taxi from Marios in Fitzroy or a slightly longer train ride from the city. From 1934 to 1981 it was home to Sunday and John Reed.

Sculptor Barbara Hepworth moved to Cornwall with her husband Ben Nicholson and their triplets at the start of World War II. Her studios are now the Hepworth Museum, part of the Tate St Ives. We peered in at all the tools she used for her stone and wood carving, and wandered round the garden looking at her bronzes.
A Melburnian in London. Reading, looking, thinking. And taking photos, cooking and writing too.
