Sculptor Barbara Hepworth moved to Cornwall with her husband Ben Nicholson and their triplets at the start of World War II. Her studios are now the Hepworth Museum, part of the Tate St Ives. We peered in at all the tools she used for her stone and wood carving, and wandered round the garden looking at her bronzes.

In a week of lots of birthday surprises, the biggest one was being taken to Cornwall. I’ve always wanted to go because of Rebecca, and Cornish cream. We arrived late on Saturday, too late to explore. On Sunday, the last day of England’s freak October heatwave, we drove down to Helston and explored the coves hidden in forest. Where does this kind of light come from?
